Fiberglass Boat Repair in the Okanagan - What You Need to Know
Fiberglass is the most common hull material on modern day recreational boats, and for good reason — it's durable, relatively lightweight, and holds its shape well under normal use. But it's not indestructible, and when it gets damaged, its important that the repair is up to professional standards.
How fiberglass damage happens
In the Okanagan, the most common causes are impact damage from rocks or debris in shallow water, bumps and bruises from the dock, and stress cracks from repeated flex.
Damage caused by impacts is usually obvious. A strike against a dock, a rock, or another boat leaves a visible mark — anything from a surface gouge to a full puncture depending on the severity. Stress cracks tend to show up around high-load areas like the transom, stringers, and around hardware mounting points.
Why the repair process matters
A fiberglass or gel coat repair done wrong will fail structurally and cosmetically. If moisture isn't properly removed before the repair, if the laminate isn't properly prepared, or if the wrong materials are used, the repair will crack, delaminate, absorb water or look patchy.
Proper fiberglass repair involves grinding back damaged material to clean un-compromised laminate, rebuilding the area with layers of fiberglass cloth and resin, fairing the surface, and then finishing with gel coat that's matched and blended to the surrounding area. Each step requires cure time. Skipping steps or rushing cure time is how repairs fail.
Certification matters
Not everyone doing fiberglass work has formal training in composite repair. Crowley Marine Care is certified in fiberglass and gel coat repair through Advanced Composite Technologies in London, Ontario. That means the work follows established methods for material selection, laminate schedules, and surface finishing — not just guesswork.
We come to you
One of the most common questions we get is whether boats need to be trailered somewhere for repairs. For most fiberglass and gel coat work, the answer is no. We work dockside and at storage facilities across the Okanagan — Kelowna, West Kelowna, Vernon, Lake Country, Penticton, and surrounding areas.
