How Often Should You Detail Your Boat? A Practical Guide for Okanagan Boat Owners
The Okanagan is hard on boats. Long, hot summers mean intense UV exposure from May through September. Lake water leaves mineral deposits and film on surfaces. Boats that sit in slips are exposed to the elements constantly. Boats in dry storage get dusty and dry out between uses.
How often your boat needs detailing depends on how it's stored, how much it's used, and how much of the season you want it looking its best.
The case for at least once a season
A full detail at the start of the season — or at the end before winter storage — is the minimum most boats need. Spring detailing sets you up with clean, protected surfaces going into peak use. Fall detailing before storage prevents mold, mildew, and surface contamination from sitting all winter and becoming much harder to deal with in spring.
If you're only doing one detail a year, end of season is arguably the better choice. Letting grime, oxidation, and moisture sit on surfaces through a Okanagan winter accelerates deterioration.
Mid-season maintenance
For boats in regular use — out two or three times a week through July and August — a mid-season wash and wipe keeps surfaces clean and extends the life of any sealant or wax applied in spring. It's less about appearance and more about protecting the work already done.
When the exterior needs more attention
Gel coat that hasn't been polished in several years will have oxidation that a basic wash won't address. A cut and polish every two to three years is a reasonable maintenance schedule for most boats. Boats stored outdoors or in direct sun may need it more frequently.
A note on DIY vs professional detailing
Machine polishing done incorrectly can cut through gel coat unevenly or burn through at edges. Vinyl and upholstery conditioning with the wrong products can accelerate cracking. The cost of a professional detail is worth it for the surfaces that matter — it's cheaper than replacing upholstery or repairing gel coat damage caused by improper technique.
